Summer sightseeing in Otaru

Otaru has developed as a herring fishing town since the 1860s. With the activation of economy and trade, financial institutions and trading companies lined up until the mid-1900s. It became a city that drove the Hokkaido economy as a city of finance and sales in Japan. However, as herring fishing suddenly slumped and economic functions moved to Sapporo, the population of 200,000 people used to be halved and depopulated.
This lonely city has awoken due to the blooming tourism development of the Otaru Canal, which began in the mid-1980s. The Japanese-Western eclectic building built in the early 20th century, which had existed quietly until then, has been reused as a tourist facility. And its nostalgic scenery of Otaru has gradually attracted tourists.
In addition to this, Otaru is a "sushi town" with more than 100 sushi restaurants in the city. Because it is close to the scenic Shakotan Peninsula and the magnificent natural land of Niseko, it is now a tourist attraction in Central Hokkaido. It has become a base and has been reborn as a tourist city visited by more than 7 million tourists every year.
By the way, the place name of "Otaku" has derived from the Ainu word "Ota Oo Nai" (meaning a river on a sandy beach).
