Mount Esan is an active volcano at an altitude of 618 meters in Hakodate, Hokkaido. It is located at the southeastern tip of the Oshima Peninsula, jutting out into the Pacific Ocean. In addition to being designated as the Esan Natural Park, it was also chosen as one of Japan's 100 Famous New Mountains, 100 Famous Hokkaido Mountains and 100 Famous Hokkaido Mountains. The name comes from the Ainu word "Esa-ni" (cape). Due to the effects of hot vapor and geothermal heat, Mt. Esan from the middle to the upper regions has few vegetation types and has been revealed. The surface of the volcano is reddish brown. Due to its rugged and hot lava mountain conditions, it has been associated with religious faith since ancient times. It is also a sacred site (Power spot) following Mount Osore in the Shimokita Peninsula.
You can take a large bus to the Kagoken parking lot at an altitude of 300 meters above sea level. From there you can walk to the top of the mountain in about 70 minutes. The vegetation near the summit may be few, but at the foot of the hill there are approximately 600,000 tsutsuchi flowers lined up also
